A Community Needs Assessment Survey is conducted annually by San Juan Regional Medical Center to determine what the health needs are for San Juan County as perceived by the citizens of the county. The 2008 survey was the result of 1000 telephone surveys administered in both English and Spanish, 83 interviews conducted with Native American respondents and five focus groups. The survey included a diverse and wide range of demographics.
The survey concluded that there were 14 areas of need identified by the survey respondents:
- ADD/ADHD
- Barriers to accessing healthcare services
- Cirrhosis/liver disease
- Diabetes
- Flu Vaccinations
- Obesity and weight loss
- Oral health
- Prenatal care
- Respiratory disease
- Routine checkups and preventive screenings
- Sexually transmitted diseases
- Teen births/unwed mothers
- Unintentional injury

The Board of Directors and management of SJRMC conduct this survey annually for the purpose of determining how best to direct resources to improve the health of all citizens in the county. Gaps in healthcare are identified and evaluated, and the hospital's focus will be on closing those gaps where appropriate.
